The Jesse Tree is based on the prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah to King David's father, named Jesse. This prophecy announces that an offspring (that is, a new shoot) will spring from the old stump to bring the Kingdom of God.
Isaiah 11:10 says:
"And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse,
which shall stand for an ensign of the people;
to it shall the Gentiles seek:
and his rest shall be glorious."
During the next few days leading up to Christmas, we will meet some of Jesus' ancestors, named in the genealogy given in Matthew 1. These are stories of humanity that tell us why Jesus came to us.
